Today the monastery stands in the El Raval district but before the 14th century it was located outside the city hence its rural location gave it its name. There are no records confirming the monastery's date of origin but historians believe that it was founded sometime in the latter part of the ninth century. Documentation of the monastery dates it from 977; it also tells us that the Muslim troops of al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir attempted to destroy it in 985 after which the monks abandoned the monastery.


In 1096 restorations started on the monastery at which time a new monastic community arrived. The turbulent history of Sant Pau del Camp reared its ugly head once more when in 1114 the monastery was again attacked. The persistent monks once again restored the monastery three years later which at this time it became a priory of the monastery. Due to its turbulent history and age it was declared a National Monument in 1879.
